Bit more details: 1. Why won’t my snowblower start after sitting all year? This is the most common issue during the first snow. Typical causes include:
Fresh gas and a quick spark plug check often solve it. 2. Why does my snowblower start but then stall? If your machine starts but shuts off when you engage the auger or hit deep snow, check for:
3. What snowblower should I buy for my home? Choosing the right type depends on your driveway and snowfall.
4. How do I prepare my snowblower for the first snowfall? A simple check can prevent most mid-storm breakdowns. Before the storm:
5. Where can I get snowblower service in Ottawa? Shops fill up fast after the first snowfall. Look for:
Final Tips Before the Snow Arrives Do a quick test run before the storm. Check your shear pins, belts, and controls. Fix small issues now instead of in the middle of the storm. Snowblowers aren’t just winter tools—they’re investments. Whether you rely on yours for a few light storms or to tackle Ottawa’s heavy dumps every week, regular maintenance can significantly extend its lifespan, saving you money and headaches.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through simple snowblower maintenance tips to keep your machine running strong—season after season. Why Snowblower Maintenance Matters Ottawa winters are tough. Snow, slush, salt, and freezing temps can wear down even the most rugged machine. But with just a few seasonal maintenance steps, you can:
Pre-Season Checklist (Do This Every Fall) Before the first snowfall hits, get your snowblower ready to roll: 1. Change the Oil Old oil breaks down and can gum up your engine. Change it every season (or every 25–50 hours of use). Use a high-quality winter-grade oil. 2. Check the Spark Plug A clean, properly gapped spark plug ensures your snowblower starts smoothly in cold weather. Replace if it looks dirty or corroded. 3. Inspect Belts and Cables Frayed belts or loose cables can lead to breakdowns. Replace worn parts early—it’s cheaper than a mid-season repair. 4. Lubricate Moving Parts Apply lubrication to auger shafts, chute rotators, and drive axles to prevent rust and keep everything moving freely. 5. Test the Shear Pins These safety devices protect your machine if it hits a hard object. Keep a few extras on hand and inspect your existing pins for wear. In-Season Tips (While You’re Using It) 1. Let It Warm Up Start your snowblower and let it idle for a few minutes before clearing. This helps oil circulate and prevents stalling. 2. Use Fresh, Stabilized Fuel Gas can degrade quickly—especially in cold weather. Use fuel stabilizer, or buy ethanol-free fuel from a small engine shop like ours. 3. Clear Snow Promptly Don't let heavy snow compact. Clear in stages during major storms—it's easier on your machine and gives better results. 4. Clean After Every Use Salt and slush can corrode the auger and housing. After clearing, run the auger to eject any packed snow, then brush or towel-dry the machine. End-of-Season Storage Tips When winter winds down, prep your snowblower for hibernation:
Bonus: Pro-Level Maintenance from Ottawa Experts At OttawaSnowblowers.com, we offer full snowblower tune-ups and winter prep services—whether you bought from us or not. You get:
Final Thoughts Regular snowblower maintenance isn’t complicated—but it’s essential. With a little time and care, you can keep your snowblower running like new and avoid costly repairs down the road. Ottawa’s Snowfall: Be Prepared for the Unpredictable Winter

Explore our Snowblower Collection & Service Snowblowers often sit idle for most of the year, but when winter arrives, they become essential. Regular maintenance, even when used sparingly, ensures your snowblower will perform when you need it most. Here are key reasons why servicing your snowblower yearly is crucial for peace of mind 1. Prevent Unexpected Breakdowns Snowstorms come without warning, and the last thing you want is your snowblower stalling mid-use. Regular checks help identify potential issues before they turn into costly repairs, ensuring your equipment is always ready to go. 2. Improve Longevity and Efficiency A well-maintained snowblower can last much longer than a neglected one. Just like any machine, regular upkeep, such as oil changes and tune-ups, keeps it running efficiently, saving you from premature replacement costs. 3. Lubrication to Prevent Rust and Seizing The mechanical parts of your snowblower are prone to rusting and seizing when left without proper care. Regular lubrication keeps gears and moving parts functioning smoothly, extending the life of your machine and avoiding unnecessary damage. 4. Protect Against Wear and Tear Even if you only use your snowblower a few times a year, parts like the auger, belts, and blades can still experience wear and tear. Servicing ensures these parts are checked and replaced if necessary, so your snowblower is always at peak performance. 5. Peace of Mind During Winter’s Worst Ottawa’s winters are unpredictable. Regular maintenance gives you the confidence that your snowblower will start without a hitch when you need it most, no matter the snowfall. At YARMAND, we’ve earned over 1000+ raving reviews by ensuring customers get reliable service and quality equipment year after year. It’s October and Fall is in the air. You suddenly need a sweater for evening walks, and it won’t be long before leaves will be falling everywhere. But those leaves won’t be the only thing falling before Spring hits again. Maybe you’ve been nursing along an older snow blower for the last few seasons, crossing your fingers you’ll get another year out of it. Maybe you’ve been a faithful shovel person who’s still looking for the right time to upgrade to something that does the work for you. Either way, this year’s Ariens lineup is one of the best we’ve had in a long time and a great time to step up your game. So, before you get overwhelmed by all the options out there, let us give you a couple benchmarks to consider based on your needs. View Ariens Snowblowers in stock in Ottawa visit our inventory selection at YARMAND Store. or call us at 613-724-4332 Here are the top five Sno-Thros® in the Ariens lineup this season: 1. Deluxe 28 SHO One of our best-selling units for years now, the Deluxe series of Sno-Thro offers a perfect combination of power and value. While all the models in the Deluxe series have their selling points, the Deluxe 28 SHO does a really great job of bringing it all together. Powered by an Ariens AX 306cc engine, you have 15 lb.-ft. of torque to dig through the deepest, wettest white stuff out there. The real treat is the Super-High-Output (SHO) impeller which is generally only available on our Platinum and higher products. This high spinning fan in the back of the housing keeps the augers clear to pick up more snow and then launches it out of the chute up to 55 feet (read: the neighbor two houses over with the annoying Christmas lights … his driveway). An LED dash light helps for dawn and dusk clearing, and its cast-iron gearcase and all-steel construction tie together that traditional Ariens quality as well. 2. Kraken Did you read the name? There really isn’t much more that needs to be said. Quite simply, this is the most badass machine we’ve ever built that doesn’t require formalized operator training. If there’s a feature a snowblower needs, it has it, and then a few extra just to be sure. Based on our Professional series, a 420cc engine with electric key start and electronic fuel injection (EFI) means more power than even reasonable is on tap, launching snow a yard-spanning arc of 60 feet! RapidTrak technology with electronic track adjustment for any terrain, hydrostatic transmission giving infinite speed control on the fly, electronic chute control, and enough LED lights to get passers-by to flash their brights at you. We say, “When Hell freezes over, this will be the machine they use to clear it out” and that’s not an exaggeration. 3. PathPro 21 Remote Chute Launching snow to the next county is fun, but there’s something to be said for simple and effective snow clearing too, and, let’s be honest, most people don’t need to move that much snow that often. Single stage paddle machines are common for homeowners and the go-to for many commercial crews for good reason - they can tackle most snowfalls up to 9 inches and throw snow up to 35 feet. The best part about a single stage is they clear right down to the pavement for a clean finish without a second pass. This 21” machine even has a remote chute for added convenience. 4. Platinum 28 SHO RapidTrak Gravel driveway, steep incline, hidden ice under the snow – we feel your pain. Our wheeled units are some of the best in the industry, but sometimes wheels don’t cut it. Our RapidTrak (think tank treads) is the industry-leading solution to effortlessly tackle all the above. A single lever allows you to switch between track or wheel mode depending on your terrain. And for when you need the added pressure on the housing, a dig-in mode allows you to plow up and clear that heavy compacted snow with ease. As a Platinum machine, you also get the benefit of heated hand grips, LED headlight, and our 369cc Ariens AX engine to turn the work of clearing snow into fun. 5. Professional 28
When you are ‘The King of Snow,’ all your equipment has to stand up to heavy use. That said, we created a line of Sno-Thros that can withstand the added rigor of daily commercial use. The best part? You don’t have to be a pro to step up your snow blowing game to pro level. Powered by our Ariens AX 420cc engine, the Professional 28 can clear 79 tons of snow per hour and throw it 60 feet away – out of sight, out of mind. Standard, as well, are all the features a Professional would demand of a commercial Sno-Thro: heated hand grips to keep you going for hours, LED headlight to tackle the blizzard without waiting for daylight, all-steel construction with commercial grade handlebars, and a cast-iron gearcase for the durability and reliability that leaves Ariens alone at the pinnacle of the market. Thousands of customers bet their business on this machine, and that should say it all. Do you know how to start your Ariens® Sno-Thro®? If you have a non-EFI, or non-electronic fuel injected snow blower, you may need to choke and prime your snow blower engine before starting. Watch how we start a two-stage snow blower engine using the choke and primer in this quick video. WE DID IT! Today we are donating $6,000 to the Ottawa Food Bank. Thank you to our customers, sponsors, and Yarmand team for making this Food Drive a success. What a great way to kick off the 2021 holiday weekend!

To donate visit: ottawasnowblowers.com/community Call: 613-724-4332 Visit: 1642 Woodward Dr, Ottawa, ON K2C 3R8 Why is ethanol bad? Ethanol absorbs moisture like a sponge! Ethanol blends have the ability to retain up to 50 times more water than pure gasoline and carry it through your fuel system. After prolonged use, that water corrodes parts like an engine's fuel line and carburetor. Eventually enough rust forms in those narrow passageways to restrict fuel supply causing the engine to not start. The Importance of Pure Gasoline Trips to the pump are a lot different now than they were 20 years ago. With the integration of ethanol into our fuels, we now have to be more careful about which button we push at the pump, especially when filling a fuel tank of small engines such as lawnmowers, snow blowers and chainsaws. Highly recommended fuel tips:

What's the best way to knock down those ice-encrusted drifts at the end of your driveway? With a pair of Ariens® snow blower drift cutters. Ariens Sno-Thro® drift cutters extend higher than your Sno-Thro auger housing to knock down drifts and direct them into your augers. They also cut through tall, hard-packed, ice-encrusted snow piles like those left at the end of your driveway by the snowplow. How do you change oil in a snow blower? It's easy. Watch our quick video to learn how to replace the engine oil in your Ariens snow blower. Before you start, remember to read the safety instructions in the operator's manual for your unit. If your Ariens® Deluxe, Platinum or Professional series snow blower exhibits erratic tracking, or "pulling" to one side during operation, it can likely be resolved with a simple adjustment. In most cases, this is because the tractor, or frame of the unit is out of alignment with the auger housing, making the Auto-Turn™ technology falsely sense movement and want to turn erratically. Watch our product support team instruct how to make a simple adjustment to help the Auto-Turn feature perform as designed. Before performing service, always read the safety section of your operator's manual. What to look for when you buy a snowblower in Ottawa. YARMAND Interview with
